Former All-Star Chris Webber to join Sacramento Kings’ frontcourt again

In an effort to rekindle team spirit both in the locker room and from the dwindling fans in the stands, the Sacramento Kings have acquired the rights to forward Chris Webber April 1. Webber is coming out of retirement for another season with his old team, hoping to light a fire under the hapless team and provide guidance to the rising stars on the squad.

The former NBA All-Star was thrilled to be asked back my the Maloofs’ organization, calling it, “a chance to come back home to where I truly belong.”

“I’ve always loved Sacramento,” Webber said. “My greatest memories on the court were with the Kings, and I hope to finish my career where I made my home.”

Webber, amidst a lawsuit involving his restaurant Center Court with C Webb, admitted his decision was partially based on the sum he may have to pay to Natomas property owner Promenade LP. The lawsuit looks to claim between $3 million and $5 million from Webber.

“I gotta pay the bills somehow,” Webber joked to a room full of reporters during a Kings’ press conference on April 1.

Webber, who over the course of his career amassed averages of 20.7 points per game to go with an impressive 9.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game, knows he may have trouble keeping up wtih today’s youth, but isn’t about to shy away from an opportunity to play in front of his true fans in Sacramento.

“I love the fans here, cowbells and all,” he said. “If I can help bring these fans another playoff run in the 2010-2011 season, I’ll know my career was worthwhile. I just hope to leave a legacy when I’m gone, and this is an opportunity to do that.”

Fans learned about the news earlier today on Twitter as several Sacramento Kings welcomed Webber aboard via the Internet’s popular tool. Many were delighted their hero was coming home; others were skeptical.

“Welcome home, Chris,” one fan Tweeted. “Time dunk on Kobe’s face.”

“It’s just another move by the Kings to sell tickets,” another wrote. “But hey, at this point, we’ll take anything to get a few wins.”

Webber was realistic about his chances, but optimistic nonetheless, saying it’s not his team anymore and he just wants to help however he’s needed.

“This is ‘reke’s team now,” Webber said. “He’s our Batman. I have no problem being our Robin. Just don’t expect me to wear that suit.”
