High school football teams play for state championship this weekend
By Patrick Ibarra
After fantastic seasons, the pinnacle of high school football is upon us. Section champions have been crowned, but starting tonight, teams will be battling for California state championships in several divisions. It doesn’t get any bigger than this.
Section banners are great for the gymnasium wall. Every year a local team in every division will earn one of those. But in California, only the elite even get an opportunity to compete for a state title, let alone win one. Grant High School of Sacramento shocked the state by bringing home a title a few years ago, and this year, a few more local schools will get the same shot at glory.
The California Interscholastic Federation announced its bowl picks recently, selecting two Southern California teams as the recipients of invites to the most prestigious game: the Open Divison bowl game. De La Salle-Concord (13-0) and Servite-Anaheim (14-0) will battle for the state’s overall championship.
But plenty of other intriguing matchups make up the rest of the bowl games. Take a look at the schedule below:
Friday, Dec. 17
Division IV: Brookside Christian-Stockton (12-0) vs. The Bishop’s School-La Jolla (13-0) at 4 p.m.
Division I: Palo Alto (13-0) vs. Centennial-Corona (14-0) at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 18
Division III: Escalon (13-1) vs. Madison-San Diego (12-1) at noon
Division II: Folsom (13-1) vs. Serra-Gardena (14-0) at 3:30 p.m.
Open Division: De La Salle-Concord (13-0) vs. Servite-Anaheim (14-0) at 7:30 p.m.
Three Sac-Joaquin Section teams made the list, as Folsom, Escalon and Brookside Christian represent Northern California proudly.
The opportunity is presented. It’s up to the boys, many who have prepared for four years for this moment, to take advantage.
