Masters of the track and field
The CIF Sac-Joaquin Masters track and field meet was held at Hughes Stadium last week as athletes competed for an opportunity to qualify for the CIF State Championships June 5-6. After an intense few days, those on top of their game came out on top of their competition, and earned the right to represent the Sacramento area as its group of elite athletes in Clovis this weekend for the ultimate in track and field.
At the Masters meet, the day started with the girls’ 4×100 meter relay, where Vallejo’s team (consisting of Monique Jones, Monikkia White, Kiara Bishop and Amber Simmons) took the top spot with a time of 48.63. St. Francis (Cekarri Nixon, Mikaela Vaden, Camile Cholger and Brianna Charles) finished second with a time of 48.99. Fairfield (Alexandria Whitmore, Arrielle Holzendorf, Ashley Stanford and Tiffany Vea) finished third with a time of 49.09.

In the boys’ race, Jesuit (Dominic Ferri, R.J. Frasier, Tom Blocker and Joseph Ruffaine) took the top spot with a time of 41.67. Laguna Creek (Jeff Adams, DionDre Batson, Cameron Peterson and Keenen Williams) took second (42.01) and Rodriguez (Jordan Morrow, Jordan Riggins, Anthony Riggins and Demetric Gamble) took third (42.35)
In the girls’ 1600 meter run, Oak Ridge’s Hayley Scott brought home a victory with a time of 5:02.77. Granite Bay’s Christine Zavesky finished second (5:05.20) and Davis’ Juliana Green took third (5:09.27). In the boys’ race, Del Campo’s Matt Case took the win (4:22.76), Davis’ Corey Coates took second (4:23.46) and Vintage’s Andrew Deck took third (4:25.09).
In the girls’ 100 meter hurdles, Lodi’s Kayla Carter took the win with a time of 14.18, while Fairfield’s Daje Pugh took second (14.35) and Foothill’s T’Keyah Birkley took third (14.40). In the boys 110 meter hurdles, Vacaville’s Kyler Martin took first (14.00), Weston Ranch’s Angell Mayfield took second (14.29) and Benicia’s Chris Mamon took third (14.35).
In the girls’ 400 meter dash, St. Mary’s Cierra Jordan took first (55.73), Oakmont’s Jazmin Harper took second (55.77) and Fairfield’s Whitmore took third (57.02). In the boys’ race, Jesuit’s Tom Blocker took first (48.58), Vallejo’s Rashad Ross took second (49.39) and Edison’s Romon Bridges took third (49.67).
In the girls’ 100 meter dash, Vallejo’s White took first (11.79), Pleasant Grove’s Kashae Knox took second (11.90) and Inderkum’s Brittany Adams took third (12.03). In the boys’ race, Laguna Creek’s Batson took first (10.70), Rodriguez’s Morrow took second (10.76) and his teammate Anthony Riggins took third (10.77).
In the girls’ 800 meter run, Ponderosa’s Samantha Diaz took the top spot with a time of 2:14.50, while Oak Ridge’s Samantha Ralstin took second (2:16.67) and Davis’ Rebecca Hammond took third (2:16.87). In the boys’ race, Del Campo’s Matt Case took first (1:54.67), Grace Davis’ Chris Izqueirdo took second (1:55.50) and Galt’s Jason Coupe took third (1:55.64).
In the girls’ 300 meter hurdles, Fairfield’s Daje Pugh took first (42.63), while Lodi’s Carter took second (43.43) and Foothill’s Birkley took third (43.55). In the boys’ race, Fairfield’s Dante Thomas took first (37.64), Jesuit’s Frasier took second (37.68) and Vacaville’s Martin took third (38.67).
In the girls’ 200 meter dash, Pleasant Grove’s Kashae Knox took first (24.02), Inderkum’s Brittany Adams took second (24.21) and Vallejo’s White took third (24.22). In the boys’ race, Vallejo’s Ross took first (21.22), Jesuit’s Blocker took second (21.44) and Edison’s Lamont Beard took third (21.62).
In the girls’ 3200 meter run, Benecia’s Sarah Tusting took top honors with a time of 11:04.43, while Granite Bay’s Brooke Holt took second (11:05.16) and Woodcreek’s Courtney Crosta took third (11:06.75). In the boys’ race, Davis’ Matt Peterson finished first (9:17.91) followed by teammate Trevor Halsted (9:18.04) and Del Campo’s Dan Mitchell (9:19.99).
In the girls’ 4×400 meter releay, St. Mary’s (D’Asia Easter, Priscilla Ezeji, Anissa Garcia and Ali Gibson) took first (3:56.27), Woodcreek (Maya Cabiness, Jacque Harvel, Hannah Hardy and Lauren Sederberg) took second (3:56.30) and Davis (Elliana Bisgaard-Church, Josephine Devanbu, Melinda Zavala and Hanna Krovetz) took third (3:56.88). In the boys’ race, Laguna Creek (Marlon Roberson, Jerome Hunter, Batson and Jeff Adams) took the top spot (3:20.49), Vallejo (Felix Chenart, Ross, Tyler Austrie and Dominique Searight) took second (3:21.58) and Fairfield (DeSean Atkins, Alex Hubbard, Egypt Guillory and T.J. Singh) took third (3:21.70).
In the girls’ pole vault, Granite Bay’s Katie Zingheim finished first with a height of 12 feet 6 inches, Del Oro’s MacKenzie Landry (12-03) took second and Bella Vista’s Angie Charles took third (11-09). In the boys’ pole vault, Rocklin’s Robbie Simmons finished first (16-04), teammate Cale Simmons finished second (15-10) and Folsom’s Mike Starr finished third (15-07).
In the girls’ triple jump, Modesto’s Stephan Stavrianoudakis took first with a distance of 37 feet 5 inches, while Golden Valley’s Porsha Grayson took second (37-01) and Buchanan Colony’s Rio Schwalbach took a tiebreaking third (36-10.5). In the boys’ triple jump, Bear Creek’s Dashawn Adger took first (46-07.5), Benicia’s Mamon took second (46-10) and Merced’s Afrikaa Holloway took third (46-09.5).
In the girls discus throw, Buchanan Colony’s Rebecca Hammar took first with a distance of 140 feet 10 inches, while El Dorado’s Lindsay Machado took second (139-08) and Vacaville’s Brianna French took third (135-11). In the boys’ discus throw, Jesuit’s Andrew Titherington took first (165-02), Granite Bay’s James Kinloch took second (161-07) and Tracy’s Kevin Speer took third (158-07).
In the boys’ high jump, Franklin of Stockton’s Xavier Williford took first (6-08), while Jesuit’s Nick Ridge took second (6-06) and Highlands’ Darius Bell took third (6-06). In the girls’ high jump, Lodi’s Samantha Balentine took first (5-07), while McNair’s Jazmine Lewis took second (5-03) and Davis’ Kaitlin Clancy took third (5-03).
In the boys’ shot put, Jesuit’s Jeremy Hines took first (55-11.25), Nevada Union’s Austin Harlicker took second (53-06.25) and Livingston’s Albert Millan took third (53-02). In the girls’ shot put, Jackie Alhoo of St. Mary’s took first (45-07.25), Buchanan Colony’s Hammar took second (39-09.25) and Rio Linda’s Alyssa Manning took third (39-05.75).
In the girls’ long jump, Armijo’s Latasha Spriggs took first (18-04.75), Rosemont’s Brienna Crimmins took second (18-01.5) and Napa’s Tatum Souza took third (17-08). In the boys’ long jump, Granite Bay’s Sutter finished first (23-06), while Chaz Smith of St. mary’s finished second (22-10) and Benicia’s Chris Mamon finished third (22-08).
